Jacky Lowry - Paper and Print Maker

Printmaking is Jacky Lowry’s passion, with collagraphs, linocut prints, and photopolymer etching her favourite techniques. Nature, especially plant life is her main inspiration. That influence came from Jacky’s somewhat feral childhood along the banks of the Canning River, Western Australia. Later came studies in science and biology, resulting in a love of scientific illustrations. That influence can also be seen in her artwork, along with a delight in the colours, forms, patterns, and designs of plants. She often uses real plants to make her collagraph plates. Another strand of Jacky’s artwork explores pattern, contrast, and abstraction through the fragmentation and collaging of print editions. Here the source images are mostly botanical forms.

Jacky’s acquisition of a printing press in 2004 enabled this passion for the printed mark to develop. Before then, her focus was on papermaking, fabric printing, and batik. (After all, what is batik but printing with wax?) Now her focus is on printmaking, with only the papermaking remaining. Jacky makes monontypes – print works that are one-offs, as well as limited edition fine art prints.  The prints are all hand printed, and so are considered to be original art works.  Many print editions have individually hand-painted backgrounds, resulting in slight differences between prints in an edition.
